Tuesday 30th June 2020 Elm Class learning

Spellings: Can you get someone to test you on 10 of the cious and tious words we have been practicing the last two weeks? Are there any you still need to practice? Can you note these down to continue to practice them?

Arithmetic: Can you have a go at the next arithmetic test? I have uploaded the test and the answers, so you can check back your working out.

Grammar: I have attached some test style activities on relative clauses to this post. Using the knowledge you have built up over the week, can you have a go at the activities?

English:  L.O. To use evidence to predict events in the book.

Do you think the warden is looking for something in particular?

What would be the best thing for Stanley to find in a hole? Why?

Imagine Stanley has found something valuable in the hole. Write the next part of the book which shows what he decides to do with it. Think carefully about Stanley’s character. This could just be a few paragraphs which leaves a cliff-hanger or you could write the next (mini) chapter.

Maths: L.O- I can draw a line graph.

Today I would like you to have a go at constructing your own line graph. A line graph is used to show a continuous set of data, which changes over a period of time. Can you construct your own line graph today? You could show the changes in temperature over the week you have collected using a line graph or the change in rainfall over each day.

When constructing a line graph, you need to think first about the units that will go along your y axis, which scale with you use- will it go up in 1’s, 5’s 10’s? Look carefully at your data and decide which scale is most appropriate. Again, remember to label your axis and give your graph a title. To plot a line graph, mark each measurement with a cross and join the crosses up with a straight line.

Topic: It is our final day on the festivals in Mexico, I would love to see your amazing work and what you have found out!

·       Research different Mexican festivals! Find out where they happen and why.

·       Find a festival which interests you (some are listed below) and study the history of it. Is there a traditional story behind the celebration? Is it similar to any festivals we have in the UK?

·       Consider the religions of Mexico. What are the main religions? Do they celebrate the same things that we do?

·       Lots of festivals have traditional songs. Can you find any and have a listen? Do you enjoy them? How is the music made? Does it sounds like music we have at our festivals in the UK? Why/why not?

·       You could look up some of the foods associated with the festivals and try to recreate them.

·       Festivals you could consider:

o   Day of the Dead

o   Carnaval

o   Cinco de Mayo

o   Independence day

o   Las Posadas.

Well done for all of your fabulous hard work!

Miss Coates.

Oak Class Tuesday 30th June

Phonics: Use the cl blend to make the words clown, clean and clever. Say the words, sound them out, write the words down. Can you use the words to make a sentence? Write down your sentence. Now read your sentence to someone in your house.

Maths: I hope you found lots of shapes on your shape hunt! Can you use sticks or lolly sticks to make 2D shapes. Take pictures or draw pictures of the shapes you have made and write down their names.

Literacy: I hope you enjoyed making your puppet! Can you try and think about what your puppet character is like? Can you name your character? Is your character friendly? Is your character kind? Can you write down what your character is like?

Topic: Mexico. Today we are going to be looking at the different types of Mexican food. We will be tasting some Mexican food too! Can you find out about Mexican food and see if there is any food that you might like to try or already enjoy eating. Why not make a plate of your own Mexican food. Draw the food you like to eat.

Have a lovely day!

Maple Class home learning for Tuesday 30th June 2020

Spellings – Visit Purple Mash-English-SPaG-Phonics-Phase5-Cloze and pick two more different sets of sounds to explore.

English- practise telling some jokes to someone else. Did they laugh out loud? Have they heard it before?

Maths –  Today revise your 3d shape knowledge by going to Purple Mash – Maths – geometry – shape – properties of shape – 3d shape pairs game. How long does it take you to match the shape to its name? Can you play again and go quicker?

Theme – this week we will be learning all about some of the culture, traditions and language in Mexico. Below is a suggested list of activities to choose from, maybe pick one a day to explore.

– which language do they speak in Mexico?

– How would you say “hello”, “goodbye” and “thank you” in Mexico?

– How would you count to 10 in Mexico?

– Can you explore writing in Mexico?

– How would you write your name in Mexico?

– What is the national sport of Mexico? Can you research and practise some of the actions?

– What food is traditionally eaten in Mexico?

– Do people in Mexico have any traditional good luck symbols?

Thank you, Mrs Keeler.

Cedar class learning for 30 JUN 2020

English: LO: to plan a scary story.

Yesterday we discussed how to create a spooky atmosphere in our writing and came up with a list of spooky adjectives. Today, I would like you think very carefully about your scary story.

I would like you to come up with a plan for your story. Create a spider diagram and write some ideas down for the following points:

– Setting (where will the story take place? Mine was in some underground tunnels).

– Character(s) (Who is in your story? My main character was a human who was exploring some tunnels. Yours could be told from the perspective of a monster if you fancy a challenge!).

– The scare (What in your story is going to be scary? Might your character be shocked by a giant alligator/monster/spooky surprise?).

– The ending (Will your character defeat the spooky thing? Will it maybe not actually be something scary but someone dressed up as something scary [like in scooby-doo]? Does the story just suddenly end on a cliffhanger?).

Maths: LO: to describe shapes using mathematical vocabulary.

Today I would like you to use your mathematical vocabulary to create a ‘wanted’ poster on a shape. Take a piece of paper and write ‘WANTED’ at the top, then draw your shape on the poster. Give your shape some features and a name, then describe it on the poster. Give some extra detail (see my one for an example), and add some colour to your poster. Don’t forget, use your mathematical vocabulary from your definition poster to help you.

Challenge: create a wanted poster for a 3D shape.

Skylarks suggested learning Monday 29th June

Maths – This week we are looking at algebraic thinking, which can be thought of as the relationships between numbers. We will be considering different links between them and trying puzzles such as continuing sequences, looking at missing number problems and thinking about how numbers work together. Today you have a problem to try involving matches and triangles!

English – Please listen to the rest of The Promise at the link provided and then answer the questions about your response to the book.

Afternoon – This week we will be looking at the traditions, culture and language of Mexico. Try an activity from the list on the last slide, or feel free to check out ideas from the other classes!

Oak class Monday 29th June

Welcome to another great week of work! I hope you have all had a lovely weekend!

Phonics: Use the letters c and l to make the blend cl. Can you make the words clap, clip and clay. Say the words, sound them out, write them down. Now use the words in a sentence. Write the sentence down. If you have a computer can you try and type your sentence using a keyboard. Use the space bar to make sure you have good finger spaces!

Maths: This week we are looking at shapes. Can you go on a shape hunt around your home and garden to see what shapes you can find? It would be amazing if you could make your own tally chart to collect your shape data! Can you find 2D shapes and 3D shapes? Which shape is the most popular shape you can find?

Literacy: This week we are going to be writing our own story. Today I would like you to look at different books at home and see what characters are in the stories. Choose your own character to be in your story. It could be a mouse, a robot, a boy, a lion, anything you want! Draw a picture of your character and make a puppet by cutting it out and using a stick or a lolly stick so you can play with it.

Think of ideas for stories ready for tomorrow!

Topic: Mexico. This week we are looking at culture and traditions. Today we are going to be making a musical instrument using a box, string and elastic bands. Mariachi are popular musicians who play folk music in Mexico. They play in groups and often get invited to play at weddings, birthdays and celebrations. Can you have a go at making your own stringed instrument!

Good luck!
